After watching Coco Gauf’s recent triumph to become one of the youngest American women to win a US open, I felt inspired to discuss how an average person can coach themselves towards success using some of the same tools that athletes use. Coaching oneself to success demands daily discipline, focus, and consistency. Here are some practical tips to guide you on your journey:
Mindset Matters
Your mindset plays a pivotal role in your motivation, action-taking, and potential self-sabotage. Becoming aware of your thought patterns is a crucial first step. You must start with your mindset to help you get started, read the book The Summit Mindset: Winning The Battle of You Versus You. Also, Consider incorporating a guided meditation into your routine to enhance self-awareness. You can access free hypnosis tracks to assist in this process. The topics of these tracks are: Success with Money, Stop Anxiety, Weight Loss Freedom, Abundant Happiness, and Winning at Life. These free downloads are limited to one per person. I go as far as listening to meditations and affirmations while I sleep and it makes a world of difference. Instead of going to sleep listening to the television or circulating thoughts into my own mind I instill positive thoughts. I will not go into the science behind it but give it a try. A few that I recommend are: I AM SUCCESSFUL” – 528 Hz I Am Affirmations (miracle tone) and I AM Affirmations: IMMEDIATE WEALTH Align With ABUNDANCE FREQUENCY While You Sleep 528Hz Affirmation.
Set Clear Goals
Start each day by setting specific, realistic, measurable, and achievable goals within your designated timeframe. Avoid setting overly ambitious goals, especially if you’re not accustomed to regular physical activity. Gradually build up your capabilities and habits. Consult professionals like doctors, fitness coaches, or dietitians when engaging in physical activities.
Get Professional Guidance
Consider hiring a coach or mentor, especially if you’re uncertain where to begin. They can help you clarify your goals and tailor a plan. I know this is a post about coaching yourself to success, and here I am discussing hiring a coach again, but I have found that hiring a coach, even it it was for a one-time thing for a period of 3 months, gave me better insight into what to focus on. Also, one of the reasons athletes succeed wit h a coach by their side is because the coach can see their blindspots. If you are not ready to hire a coach at a minimum, find yourself a mentor.
Self-Reflection
At the end of each day, acknowledge your accomplishments rather than focus on what you didn’t achieve. Embrace the fact that you’re a work in progress. Identify areas for improvement and use these insights to make necessary adaptations. Simone Biles frequently talks about how journaling helped her maintain her goals and ease her anxiety.
Create a Plan
Once you’ve set your goals, develop an actionable plan. Break down your objectives into smaller, manageable tasks and allocate specific time slots for their completion. Having a mentor or coach can help refine your plan as you gain more clarity through action.
Stay Focused
Maintain your focus on your goals and resist distractions. Meditation can enhance your ability to ground yourself and stay self-aware. Recognize the two voices within you: one that believes in your potential and one filled with doubt. Your life is shaped by the voice you listen to most frequently. Become aware of this dynamic to regain focus.
Visualization
Visualization is a powerful tool utilized by athletes. Studies show that effective visualization can be as impactful as physical practice. To visualize properly, consider exploring a relevant book on the subject. I recommend the book, How to Visualize Like a World Champion.
Track Your Progress
Keep a daily record of your progress. This helps maintain motivation and allows you to see how far you’ve come. Celebrate your successes and learn from setbacks. Journaling can be a valuable tool for self-reflection and progress tracking.
Self-Coach to Give More
Realize that achieving your goals may push you to your limits. Embrace the concept of “One More” from Ed Mylett’s book, “The Power Of One More.” Your energy levels fluctuate based on your daily behaviors, habits, and thoughts, ultimately shaping your average performance. One of the things that was instrumental in me giving more was doing a guided meditation and visualization of what my life would look like if I did not pursue my dreams and go all out. I did this meditation years ago and yet it remains to be a constant reminder to give more.
Also, implement things and people that inspire you. It is amazing how talking to someone or watching low-vibration videos prevents us from giving more. I often find videos on YouTube that are compilations of motivational speakers, such as this one here. with great visuals
Consistency is Key
Consistently showing up is crucial. Many individuals make their goals more complex than necessary due to their attachment to certain narratives. Simplify your approach and stay committed to consistent habits. I realized that this was one of the things blocking me from being an entrepreneur after reading The Power Of Consistency. We know what we are supposed to be doing but we make it more complicated then it needs to be because we like telling our stories. We have gotten so comfortable with the narrative that anything too to take action outside of our norm for a long period of time feels exhausting. You may only be a few habits away from obtaining your goals and maintain those consistently and you can live the life that you desire.
Practice Self-Care
Prioritize physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Ensure you sleep well, exercise regularly, and maintain a healthy diet. Allocate time for activities that bring joy and rejuvenate your spirit. Managing your energy effectively is vital for sustained progress. The book Sustain your game by Alan Stein can give you insight on how to do this effectively.
Reflect and Adjust
At the end of each day, take time to reflect on your achievements and areas for improvement. Modify your plan as needed to continue progressing towards your goals.
By following these steps, you can self-coach your way toward success, fostering discipline, focus, and consistency in your journey to achieve your desired outcomes.
Bonus visualization
You have traveled a significant distance to arrive at your current point in life. However, it’s important to acknowledge that the individual you have been up to this moment may not be the same person who will guide you through the forthcoming significant chapter. Take a moment to contemplate this.
Can you envision a more evolved version of yourself? Picture someone even more motivated and resolute. Someone who, when confronted with obstacles, doesn’t retreat but instead presses forward.
Envision a version of yourself who assumes responsibility not only for your own actions but also for the influence you exert on the world around you. This version is not simply reacting to the world; instead, they are actively shaping it.
Consider a version of yourself who is not merely prepared for the impending challenges but eagerly anticipates them. This individual isn’t just bracing for impact; they are actively working to create it, to effect change.
Lastly, imagine a version of yourself who is not content with doing the bare minimum but is prepared and eager to invest their full effort. This goes beyond mere diligence; it encompasses fervor, unwavering commitment, and the dedication to evolve into the finest possible iteration of yourself.
The transformation into this person is not solely about advancing to the next stage in your life; it’s about crafting a future that you can take pride in. So, are you prepared to meet this improved version of yourself?
By following these tips, you can coach yourself to success on a daily basis and achieve the goals that matter most to you. Remember to stay disciplined, focused, and consistent, and to celebrate your successes along the way.
